Annual Ryegrass Selection

John Jennings – Professor –ExtensionForages (9-10-12)

Earlier I sent out information about selecting winter annual forages for fall and winter grazing. Annual ryegrass was discussed in that article. In general, diploid type ryegrass varieties have more cold tolerance than tetraploid types. However, there are exceptions to the rule. Gulf annual ryegrass is a diploid and has very poor cold tolerance. When considering varieties to plant in areas of Arkansas where cold winters are expected, be cautious about the source of the variety information. Many non-cold tolerant ryegrass varieties look very good in southern variety trials especially in warm winters.  Click here for full article.
